My name is Breanne and I was in the Interior Design program at VCAD
Why go back to school?
It’s just one of those things where I was always interested in. I took four years out of high school and travelled around. I have always been interested in the design world and decided to pursue it. I found VCAD and it looked like a good school; so, I looked into it, got accepted and moved to Vancouver.
What interested you about Interior Design?
I have always been one of those people who walked into the room and noticed everything that I don’t like about the place or things I like about the place; so, I just figured that it was my field.
Did you have any apprehensions or fears?
Definitely! One of my apprehensions was about failing in general and not being good at what I was trying to do especially after taking so long after being in high school. It made me a bit nervous, but it was good in the end.
Were family and friends supportive?
My family has always been supportive and my friends as well. They all want me to be in Sasquatchian if I could, but whenever I want they will always be there for me.
Why choose to attend VCAD?
I didn’t know much about VCAD because I was in Australia at that time and I looked at a few schools. VCAD looked like a choice for me and I chose that one. Speaking to the representative of VCAD made the program sound very good and that is why I chose it. It just sounded like hands on and teachers sounded very good.
What did you like most about the program?
Our teachers were just fantastic! They really made it what our school needed to be. They taught me a lot and provided us with everything we needed.
How did the instructors help in your program?
I think it was beneficial because if they didn’t have the experience and anybody could be teaching you, but the fact that all of them were interior designers themselves we had a real world experience advice.
Why is the portfolio show important?
I think it will benefit us in a sense that we kind of met those people and we know how to communicate with them. They became our contacts we can get in touch with.
How did it help having actual working instructors?
We went to a few furniture stores and we went to tile stores, and carpet stores, and glass stores as well, which was very cool.
How has graduation changed your life?
I am going to be much more focused on finding a job in the industry and it will change me in many ways I’m not really sure of yet.
What has school done for you?
I can easily design somebody’s space if that’s what they need and I’m much more involved into the design community, and I’m now more experienced in places I have never been experienced in before.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about going back to school?
Be confident and always ask for help if you need it. Basically … yeah!
