VCAD Fashion Interview with Joshua Shin

My name is Joshua Shin and I am from Korea.

I always loved fashion and how people dress, and I was interested in shopping too. I was thinking about my career and I made a decision that fashion is what I like the most. I realized that hotel management was not my course; therefore, I switched to the course that I like which is fashion. I did some research on the internet and came across VCAD. I’ve learned a lot about what to expect, which was very good.

I like classic looks and also I love Alexander McKimm’s crazy looks.

My collection is about nightmare mixed with the Asian looks – really dark, but kind of unisex. I always wanted to make that kind of collection and I think that it was the only time to do what I wanted to do. So I did it.

I am following my dream.

VCAD Fashion Interview with Huong Le

My name is Huong Le and I am from Vietnam. I have been in Canada for about three years.

In my country I studied law and worked in a business for more than ten years. When I came to Canada I decided to change my life and start going to a school to study fashion design.

At VCAD I have learned a lot about fashion, for example, how to design clothing from a concept to the actual garment. The most important thing I have learned was to keep practicing.

Prior to VCAD I didn’t know anything about drawing or sewing because I had never done anything like that before. My decision to pursue fashion design was very surprising for my family, friends and even me.

When I designed my collection and I was thinking about a woman of my age who wants to be feminine, elegant and classy. Beauty of a woman is my inspiration for the fashion design.

Valerie
Graphic Design Student
VCAD taught me a lot about the use of color, design, principles in general and it’s funny because I went into graphic design course where I’ve been able to apply all sorts of my illustrations. In other words a lot what I’ve learned is universal.

Uni
Fashion Design Student
I just love the fact that there are so many people congregating in one place and all of them have different ideas and different plans for themselves. It is very interesting to meet all of those different people and associate with all of those designers with different aesthetics. VCAD is unique because it’s in the city that is a melting pot.

Maryann
Graphic Design Student
I did a lot of research about the schools that offer graphic design program and I’ve chosen VCAD because they are more traditional and then they go into digital. It is not like going straight into computer design and I really like that. I like to sketch and draw, and then put into the computer. It looks very nice.

VCAD was really nice especially teachers. They were easy to talk to and they helped us a lot. We had a lot of fun and it was very easy to model with them. It was very easy to get feedback and advice from them too.

Evan
Fashion Design Student
Every moment at VCAD was about preparing my graduate collection and even though it can be very stressful and probably the hardest part of the program it is still very fulfilling to finish, be able to come here and display all of your work for the people in the industry, family and friends. This is the big payoff.
