VCAD Fashion Interview with Zoe Collins

My name is Zoe Collins.

I decided to go into fashion because a) I got obsessed with sewing and I knew I wanted to make something creative with my hands and b) everybody wears clothes; so, I see fashion as a great way of portraying your own style, your creativity and your artistic vision, and sharing it with other people in a very accessible way.

I was really struck when I first entered this program at how determined my fellow colleges were and it really spurred me to take it more seriously as I would have to. Going in to the program I knew very little about the fashion world, about design, this and that. I liked art and I liked making stuff, that’s all I knew. I thought I might be making dresses one day, but who knows.

Coming into the program and seeing all of those people who are so into it really made me to step up a notch.

Now when I think about fashion, there is a whole slew of things. I think that my vision of what fashion is has really expanded since starting at VCAD and since finishing at VCAD as well. To me now it’s a whole spectrum of self-expression as to where you hold yourself – it’s your posture, it’s not just the clothes you wear, but the way you wear them.

VCAD Fashion Interview with Tennille Oppen

Tennille Oppen. I was born in Edmonton, Alberta. I moved here about five years ago to go to the school and I have been living here since.

My collection was really inspired by the process of dyeing fabric; so, experimented a lot with natural dyes, synthetic dyes and what kind of fabrics would take different types of dyes and how they interacted together. It is supposed to be fun and light hearted, and not to be taken too seriously, which is how I like things.

I was inspired by 1930’s surreal art; so, it’s a little bit strange especially those couple of pieces. I designed all of my own prints on fabrics. I really like the surrealism aspect of the things, which are a bit larger than life and finding the way to tailor them to a wearable commodity.

Whether you like it or not subconsciously or consciously you judge someone for the first 30 seconds of meeting them and a large part of that is what they wear, how they look, how they present themselves and you want to pay attention to that because even if you don’t think it is important, it’s a lot more important than the most people think it is.

VCAD Fashion Interview with Ross Victoriano

My name is Ross Victoriano.

My collection is about Shaolin monks. It is actually originated from China where the martial arts were first formed. I thought it was an excellent opportunity to get my Asian culture especially because I am half Filipino and half Chinese. That’s why I used Shaolin monks as my inspiration.

At the beginning my collection was full of colors and full of details of every kind and then I’ve learned to minimalize it and go into one direction where it will tell a story to the people about those clothes.

The changes that I had I think are paying attention to every detail on making garments because when I was still studying I didn’t care about details, I always focused on the designs, but when I learned sewing I got to know more about paying attention to the details.

When I take inspiration I always get it from the people around me and people I see one the streets, that I get inspired from. Also, those are things I haven’t seen before.

VCAD Fashion Interview with Joshua Shin

My name is Joshua Shin and I am from Korea.

I always loved fashion and how people dress, and I was interested in shopping too. I was thinking about my career and I made a decision that fashion is what I like the most. I realized that hotel management was not my course; therefore, I switched to the course that I like which is fashion. I did some research on the internet and came across VCAD. I’ve learned a lot about what to expect, which was very good.

I like classic looks and also I love Alexander McKimm’s crazy looks.

My collection is about nightmare mixed with the Asian looks – really dark, but kind of unisex. I always wanted to make that kind of collection and I think that it was the only time to do what I wanted to do. So I did it.

I am following my dream.

VCAD Fashion Interview with Olivia Stewart

I’m Liv. I was born on Vancouver Island.

I grew up sewing with my grandmother from a very young age and realized that I had passion for the fashion and clothing; so, couple of years ago I went here to Vancouver and took the program at VCAD. I have been working on clothing ever since and mastering my craft.

My collection is called “Pioneer Provisions” and it has been inspired by the silhouette of the moth and cocoon shape. I kind of find that the moth has been an underdog of the butterflies and that is why I took an inspiration from the moth and based my clothing on that.

I think in fashion personal taste has been very opinionated and no matter what you make there will be always someone out there who hates what you make or is going to love it; so, it is a matter of putting yourself out there and finding those people who are going to love your work for what it is and how you make it.

I think to intrude your own vision and having outlets to express yourself is key. Just really a way to express what is going on inside of the person and that is what it is for me.

I see clothing as a functional thing that everybody needs, everyone has to wear it and it’s also a way to express who you are inside. Everyone wakes up in the morning and choses what to wear to show that’s the type of person they are and I think that is the most important thing for me in fashion.

VCAD Fashion Interview with Huong Le

My name is Huong Le and I am from Vietnam. I have been in Canada for about three years.

In my country I studied law and worked in a business for more than ten years. When I came to Canada I decided to change my life and start going to a school to study fashion design.

At VCAD I have learned a lot about fashion, for example, how to design clothing from a concept to the actual garment. The most important thing I have learned was to keep practicing.

Prior to VCAD I didn’t know anything about drawing or sewing because I had never done anything like that before. My decision to pursue fashion design was very surprising for my family, friends and even me.

When I designed my collection and I was thinking about a woman of my age who wants to be feminine, elegant and classy. Beauty of a woman is my inspiration for the fashion design.

VCAD Fashion Design Interview with Tira Hummelle

Get more info on the Fashion Design program at http://fashion.vcad.ca/

My name is Tira Hummelle and I went to VCAD for fashion design.

I am actually from a small town in Alberta; so, coming to the city was a huge change for me. I was originally thinking about going into the arts program and I just started looking at the different schools. I saw that there was a fashion design program available here. I thought to check it out and see if I would be interested in it, and it turned out exactly what I kind of needed. Yeah, it was right after high school.

What I have learned most while going to the school at VCAD was garment construction. I had an excellent garment construction teacher and he really taught me how to take my designs and be able to put them together and make them successfully.

To see my pieces on a model for the first time I think is one of the biggest highlights. It is different creating pieces and seeing them on a mannequin or something, but to have the whole picture put together and have all of your models wearing the pieces is amazing.
It is totally worthwhile. I could have never imagined myself doing anything else now and I had no idea that it was going to be as exciting. Being able to creatively express yourself in so many different ways is an amazing experience.

Emerging VCAD fashion designers were talking about their collections before the big show “ONWARD”. They shared their experience with the Fashion Design program, VCAD instructors and curriculum as well as inspiration behind their fashion collections, life experience and future goals.

Here is what one of the students said: “My instructors are always there for me and happy to answer my questions. My instructors are very experienced in the industry which helps a lot. The classrooms are small and personal, making it easier to ask questions from my instructor. My overall experience on campus is good. The staff is very helpful, especially in student services and financial services. Financial services helped me to understand my student loads a lot better. At VCAD I feel like I am learning a lot! My instructors push me and I obtaining many skills from them and the rest of the program.”
